Charles Catteau (born 1880 in Douai, France) worked as a decorator in the National Manufacture de Sèvres in 1902. In 1903 he graduated from the National School of Ceramics in Sèvres. He then worked at the Königliche Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg (near Munich). Charles Catteau moved to La Louvière (Belgium) as early as 1906 and worked as a designer at Boch Freres Keramis. In 1907 he was appointed head of the decoration department. This department later became known as the Atelier de Fantaisie.
